The bull thistle (also known as spear or common thistle) is another aggressive invasive European species of the aster family that has taken a firm hold across nearly every state and province across North America. As far as invasive wildflowers go, this one actually seems to have more benefits than other more harmful imports: bees and other nectar-loving wildlife get a lot of nutrients from them (and our native bees can use a lot of help these days), and the seeds are cherished by our native goldfinches. This beautiful specimen was found growing near the shore of Henderson Inlet, part of the Puget Sound system just outside of Olympia, Washington.
