Western Gray Squirrel
This northeastern subspecies of the western gray squirrel pauses in a tree long enough for me to make this image in the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge near Olympia, Washington. Because they are drastically declining in number, mainly due to non-native and invasive species of other squirrels like the more aggressive eastern gray squirrel and the fox squirrel, in 1993 the state of Washington officially listed the western gray squirrel as a threatened species.
