  • Also known as the orange mountain dandelion, this native relative to the (non-native) common dandelion is found across most of Western Canada and the United States in mountain valleys and subalpine altitudes. The leaves are edible and can be used for fermented beverages! This one was found and photographed in the mountains above Aspen, Colorado in Pitkin County on a hot summer day.

  • This particularly beautiful specimen of a the seep monkeyflower (Erythranthe guttata) is a favorite of our native bumble bees which it relies on heavily for pollination, but is also known to self-pollinate when there aren't enough bees. This particular one was found in Kent, Washington in the wetlands around Soos Creek on a warm, sunny day.

  • Field chickweed (Cerastium arvense) is a very common member of the pink and carnation family that grows natively throughout many places in the world. It is found in Europe, South American, and almost all of Canda and the United Staes excluding Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, the Carolinas, Alabama and Florida. These were found growing out of serpentine outcrops on Washington State's Fidalgo Island.

  • Found all around the world's temperate regions and native to Europe and Asia, this very common and well-recognized member of the chicory and aster family is usually known as a weed, pest, or and nuisance. To others it is an important medicinal plant, edible green, and reminder of springtime and summer. This one was found growing in an old coniferous forest with a patch of open ground in Enumclaw, Washington.

  • Detailed image of the inflorescence of the northern needleleaf air plant, complete with it's purple, tube-like flower. This one was found growing in a tree in the Fakahatchee Strand of Southwest Florida - one of North AMericas hotspots for rare plants such as these bromelaids.

  • A very common aquatic wildflower found all across Western North America, the yellow pond-lily is a type of spatterdock often confused with water lilies. This one was photographed in the sub-alpine elevations of Oregon's Mount Hood. An interesting side note is that the seeds are edible, and will pop just like popcorn!

  • The largest giant ladies'-tresses orchid I've encountered in the wild. This one was photographed on a hot early May, late afternoon day near Sopchoppy Florida.

  • This is a common orchid in the Fakahatchee Strand during the hottest part of summer, and so far I have not seen it anywhere else but here. It is easily spotted by its large lettuce-like leaves growing from any submerged log or cypress stump.
    Tall Twayblade Orchid (Liparis nervosa)
  • Tall twayblade orchid found in the wettest part of the Fakahatchee Strand. In the hottest and most miserable part of summer, these beauties can be found quite easily!

  • Close-up of the unusual tall twayblade - photographed here in knee deep water in a wet dark part of the Fakahatchee Strand. Since it was growing on a cypress knee, it was very easy to photograph at waist level.

  • Because the parasitic desert broomrape doesn't use chlorophyll like most all plants to convert sunlight and carbon dioxide into food, it doesn't need to be green. Instead, this oddly beautiful plant steals nutrients from neighboring plants and has a rather fond taste for asters, such as the sunflowers are common in the desert. This one was found growing in Western Texas near the Rio Grande River.

  • Successfully pollinated and fruiting seedpods of the nearly impossible-to-find and leafless ribbon orchid. Not only is this orchid extremely rare in the United States, it is only found in one tiny pocket of one remote part of the Northwestern Florida Everglades known as the Fakahatchee Strand, which is its northernmost range This one was photographed deep in the Strand while standing about waist-deep in the black, slowly-moving waters deep in the shadows of ancient bald cypress trees. Luckily, it can also be found in parts of the Caribbean islands, Central America, and even in some parts of Northern South America.

  • Deep in the remote wilderness between the Florida Everglades and Lake Okeechobee in South Florida there is a wildly disturbed area, that once was part of the great Everglades watershed system, but now is mostly drained from human activity, water management, and citrus and sugarcane farming leaving behind a vast tangle of dry wilderness where there are few people, roads or even access (for the faint of heart). One part of this vast landscape that still does carry water south is the Okaloacoochee Slough. In pockets of this region, you can still find survivors hanging on for dear life, such as this northern needleleaf bromeliad, which was found way off the highway in a rare dome of bald cypress trees. This was the first time I'd ever seen one so far north, and it looked healthy and ready to bloom!
    Northern Needleleaf (Tillandsia balb..ana)
  • Close-up of the incredibly colorful inflorescence of the northern needleleaf airplant, one of many subtropical airplants only found in Southern Florida. Soon after flowering it will die (typical of bromeliads), and the drying seedpods will split, sending the tiny airborne seeds to take root on another tree to start the next generation.

  • A very common sight on the lower slopes of the Cascades Mountains, the false Solomon's seal is a very common meber of the lily family. This one was photographed in the forest on the southern slope of Mount Hood in Oregon.

  • Giant ladies'-tresses found growing in a dried-up bog in the Apalachicola National Forest. Tubular flowers are a key to identifying this species from all the other similar ladies-tresses orchids.
