  • Talk about species specificity in fungi, Strobilurus conigenoides mushrooms grow only on decaying magnolia cones! These tiny little collybioid mushrooms were found on an old, decaying magnolia cone in Goethe State Forest in rural Levy County, Florida.

  • A near-perfect specimen of Ganoderma applanatum, which goes by many common names around the world such as artist's conk, artist's bracket, artist's fungus and bear bread. It gets it's name from the white pore-covered underside of the fruiting body (the shelf-like structure that's visible) that can be scratched off with a stick, and has been used as a "canvas" for drawings and writing for centuries. This one was found in rural Levy County, Florida in Goethe State Forest on a beautiful mid-November morning.

  • Viola's wood satyr catching some rays in a clearing in the Goethe State Forest in Levy County, Florida. Nearly impossible to catch as they only land for fractions of a second, the damaged wing helped me get this photograph.

  • Blue-striped garter snake discovered on a trail in the Goethe State Forest in Levy County, Florida. It has the most beautiful turquoise sides and belly!

  • The brilliantly pink rose pogonia orchid growing wild in Goethe State Forest in Central Florida.
    Rose Pogonia (Pogonia ophioglossoides)
  • A common orbweaver of thick hardwood forests of the American Southeast, this beautiful spider can be found as far north up the Atlantic coast as New England, and as far west as the Appalachian and Allegheny Mountain ranges. Harmless to humans, these spiders weave enormous webs between the trees and are responsible for keeping flying insect populations in check wherever they are found. This one was spotted in the trees in Goethe State Forest in Central Florida.

  • A perfect specimen of the "old man of the woods" bolete mushroom (Strobilomyces strobilaceus) growing in Goethe State Forest in Central Florida. While edible, many say this native fungus to Europe and North America is delicious, while others say it tastes too much like the forest floor.

  • One of the most beautiful places in all of Florida - Cedar Key, at sunset.

  • The delicate and tiny southern twayblade orchid in full bloom in Goethe State Forest. The reddish brown coloration of this winter bloomer makes an already small terrestrial orchid hard to find among the fallen leaves.
    Southern Twayblade (Neottia bifolia)
  • An unusual color form of the southern twayblade orchid. The red-brown pigment is missing entirely!
