  • The Pacific starflower is a common woodland wildflower of the forest floor, where vast carpets of them can often be found in older forests with very filtered light. Because they like cool moist peaty soils, they are often found from the Pacific coast to the upper western-side of the mountains of the Cascades in the Pacific Northwest. This was found about halfway up the western side of Oregon's Larch Mountain.

  • This stunning iris was found driving through Northern Oregon. A few miles later I found more growing along a seepage bog on the edge of the deeper part of the forest surrounding Mount Hood.

  • One of the many beautiful Indian paintbrushes on the Pacific Northwest, this one was blooming at the very top of Larch Mountain just outside of Portland, Oregon.
    Harsh Paintbrush
  • The harsh paintbrush is found in many habitats through the Pacific Northwest. Often hard to identify from several closely-related species - it has a dark, woody stem that is different from the usually soft stems of other Indian paintbrushes. This one was photographed on the lower slopes of Northern Oregon's Larch Mountain.

  • Like any member of the maple family, the winged seeds of the vine maple develop in pairs, which will dry, split, and "helicopter" to the ground on the wind where some of them will take root as part of the next generation. These seeds were photographed<br />
on Larch Mountain in Northern Oregon.

  • One of the most beautiful native lilies found in North America, this combined image of several large images stitched together is of a big clump of avalanche lilies in full bloom on Larch Mountain in Oregon. This massive print is at full natural size an enormous 10.75 feet x 2.1 feet (3.3m x 0.66m) and was created from five images.

  • Serrulate penstemon growing on the western side of Oregon's Larch Mountain. Out of the many similar species of penstemon found in the Pacific Northwest, this one is easily identified by the serated, saw-like edges of its leaves.

    Western Coralroot (Corallorhiza mert..ana)
  • A close-up of a western coralroot orchid in natural sunlight deep in a forest as the sun is setting below the foliage above. Because this was on the edge of a cliff in Northern Oregon, light lit the forest floor for only a few minutes.

  • The culinary delicacy known as the black morel is found in many places throughout the Pacific Northwest. This one was one of a few found near the top of the heavily forested Larch Mountain - just outside of Portland, Oregon.

  • Native to Britain and Ireland, bluebells are found growing wild across most of North America. Although invasive, these common and spectacularly beautiful wildflowers are found in rich soils - such as these early summer bloomers found growing along the lower slopes of the Cascades Mountains in Northern Oregon.

  • The harsh paintbrush is one of those unusual plants that are found in association with particular species of other native wildflowers. Because it actually feeds on the roots of its neighbors, it is actually at least semi-parasitic.

  • One of the most spectacular of the small flowering trees on the West Coast is the Pacific rhododendron. Ranging from the Monteray area in California north into British Columbia, this one was photographed about halfway up Northern Oregon's Larch Mountain.
