  • This unknown subspecies of Lactarius deliciosus was found growing in the Olympic National Forest in Washington state about 100 meters from Lake Ozette on a cold mid-November afternoon. During a short hike through the woods I encountered at least two dozen of them. The prominent feature is the green "stains" on the cap.

  • The Hoh Rain Forest on Washington's Olympic Peninsula is one of the most amazing places in North America to see enormous masses of ferns and mosses. Deer ferns are common throughout the Pacific Northwest and these were found growing in an old-growth part of the forest that is untouched by the logging industry. Native American hunters traditionally used these as a hunger suppressant, and are an important food source for elk in winter.

Any easy identification tool for this wonderful little fruit is the underside of the leaves, which are white. These were found growing in the Hoh Rainforest on Washington's Olympic Peninsula within sight of the Hoh River. I've personally found both the red and fully ripe black raspberries to be absolutely delicious!

  • This tall, beautiful member of the mint family is found up and down the Western coast of North America from Mexico to Alaska, and is most often associated with coastal woodlands that receive a lot of rain. I almost always see them in flower with large numbers of bumblebees every summer. These were found growing alongside a cold mountain stream in the Hoh Rainforest on Washington's Olympic Peninsula on a hot summer day.

  • With a name that can't help but invite a second glance, the dog vomit slime mold (also known as the scrambled egg slime) is a common plasmodial slime mold found all over the world on both rotting wood and the leaves and stems of living plants. Slime molds are a bit different from other fungi because they begin their life as a protoplasm as opposed to the more common thread-like structure that begin underground and appear as a fruiting body - what we commonly know as a mushroom. In Scandinavian folklore, the particular species is often associated with witchcraft, and is said to be the vomit of a witch's familiar after one has slurped up and spoiled their neighbors' milk. This one was found growing on a decaying, fallen tree in Washington's Hoh Rainforest in the Western Olympic Mountains.

  • This strange and seaweed-looking lichen is very common in the dark wet forests on the Pacific Northwest. It grows in old-growth conifers, then eventually falls to the forest floor where it is often eaten by elk and deer.

  • This incredibly remote and wild section of Washington's Pacific coastline is only accessible through a 3.2-mile hike from the nearest forest road, and also happens to be the westernmost terminus for the 1200-mile Pacific Northwest Trail (PNT) that many hikers attempt each year. Usually wet, rainy and frequented by seals, sea lions and bald eagles - the magical location is near one of the most northerly rainforests in North America. This massive print is at full natural size a whopping 14.5 feet x 3.3 feet (4.4m x 1m) and was created from five images.

  • The Cascades frog is a high altitude-loving frog found in both theCascade and Olympic mountains of the Pacific Northwest. This one was seen in August in Washington's Stevens Pass near the edge of a beautiful and remote subalpine mountain lake.

  • One of the more interesting and unique lichens found in the forests of the Pacific Northwest is the frog pelt lichen. It is rather common here, and can range in color from bluish green to olive brown, and is found growing on both rocks and dead wood, in shady, open forests at varying altitudes.

  • This is a fantastic example of a nursery log. Many large trees start off at a disadvantage, and some trees seem to do best when they start off as a tiny sapling on top of a fallen log. As these saplings grow with more access to sunlight, the strongest outcompete the weakest and eventually the roots will reach the soil, resulting in a line of trees with exposed roots. In this example, a line of growing Sitka spruce trees flourish on what once was a huge fallen log, but is now decomposed by time and decay.

  • The artist's fungus is a common species of very large polypore mushroom found on every continent except Antarctica. It gets its name from a very interesting style of art where the  mushroom is picked and the white pores of the fruiting body are scratched away to reveal the dark brown woody inside, creating a sort of natural canvas. This is where the artist can scrape away just enough to create scenes, images of people or nature, or anything else he or she can imagine. A simple search on the web can give you plenty of examples of artwork created with these mushrooms. These were photographed on the side of a tree just outside of La Push, Washington near Rialto Beach.

  • A cautious Townsend's chipmunk peers out of a pile of driftwood on Ruby Beach on Washington's Pacific Coast. Unlike many forest-dwelling species, Townsend's chipmunks tend to thrive in disturbed locations, and can adapt quickly to major changes in their environment.

  • Also known as the edible thistle, his Pacific Northwest member of the aster family is found in alpine and subalpine forested mountains. The peeled stems can be eaten, and the flowers and seeds are a common food source for butterflies, bees, and birds. This one was found just below the top of Hurricane Ridge in the Olympic Mountains of Washington.

  • A great find in the Olympic Mountains below hurricane ridge near Port Angeles, Washington! A western spotted orchid (forma intermedia) lacks the normal purplish coloration and instead has a yellowish-tan overall coloration. This terrestrial orchid is one of several members of the Corallorrhiza genus found commonly throughout most of North America, found in rich, undisturbed forests.

  • The bronzed cutworm moth is an attractive medium-sized moth is common in the Pacific Northwest where it favors cool, wet forests. This one was found at the top of Washington's Hurricane Ridge in the Olympic Mountains on a bright, sunny June afternoon.

  • The bunchberry is a very attractive member of the dogwood family found in all of the Northern States of the USA (plus Colorado and New Mexico) and all of Canada, Greenland, as well as many parts of Asia in thick, damp coniferous or mixed hardwood forests where openings in the canopy allow for some sunlight to filter down to the ground. Very adaptable in growing habits, it is found from the coastline a to as high up as the edge of the tundra.
