  • Florida State capitol building - Tallahassee, Florida.

  • White fox squirrel photographed in Tallahassee, Florida. Its white fur is a leucistic trait - the hair is actually white, not colorless - so it's not an albino. Most (up to 80%) of the fox squirrels in this area have this trait, which is unusual compared to their typical dark gray to jet black coloring.

  • Although not in flower, a unique view nonetheless - a pair of the rare and endangered confederate trillium (left) and the spotted trillium (right) growing next to each other in a forest in Tallahassee, Florida. The confederate trillium on the left is showing its distinct silvery-light green markings in the center of the leaves, while the spotted trillium to the right shows a more uniform mottling on the leaves. There is a good chance that there might be some hybridization as there seems to be a similar pattern while lacking the unique and telltale coloring.

  • This puffball mushroom is very common and I see them all over the Southeast. This is just an example of the beauty that I've been walking past so frequently while looking for "the big picture". Sometimes the beauty really is in the details!

  • A great example of mimicry, this drone fly in the Lake Talquin State Forest in North Florida - which appears at first to be a bee - feeds on nectar of wildflowers, and is especially fond of asters. Native to Europe, but naturalized in the US and Canada.

  • A single lotus flower on a hot summer morning. Most interesting about these flowers are the leaves, which will not get wet, but instead repel waterdrops in such a way that they just form "beads" on top of the pad-like structure. Lots of fun to play with when the fish aren't biting!

  • As far as moths go, most of the smaller ones are pretty much drab and forgettable. Not the the red-fringed emerald. With a beautiful emerald green coloration with ruby red highlights and details, This one-inch beauty caught my eye as I was it resting on some wood one afternoon in Tallahassee, Florida. This moth can be found across much of the eastern half of North America from Florida to New Brunswick in the Canadian Maritimes west to Ontario to Texas back down in the south.

  • This white-tailed deer was apparently used to people as it let me get this close to it just outside of Tallahassee on the Florida Panhandle. Extremely common all over the United States and Canada, its range extends from the Atlantic Ocean and west all the way to the Rocky Mountains (fantastic natural barrier), where its cousin - the black-tailed deer completes the range all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Somehow the white-tailed deer has nearly made it to the Pacific Ocean in Canada, and has a strong toehold in all of Central American and the northern part of South America. This is a huge native range for an ungulate (deer, elk, moose family) and it has been introduced in many other parts of the word such and the Caribbean Islands, Europe and even New Zealand.
