  • "There's gold in them thar hills!" When you think of gold in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest, no one is thinking of the metal that drove thousands of thrill seekers and would-be millionaires into the mountains of the Pacific Northwest, they are thinking of the absolutely wonderful and delicious Pacific golden chanterelle. Extremely important commercially, this wonderful culinary treat is found from southern Alaska to Central California and is hard to miss in the damp forests in the cooler months, where they tend to be found in profusion. These were found on a wet, cold October afternoon, deep in the forested mountains of rural Pierce County in Western Washington.

  • Also known as Virginia glasswort or pickleweed, this interesting saltwater-loving member of the amaranth family (Amaranthaceae) can be found in many seaside habitats with saltwater on the Pacific, Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. Extremely tough, it can grow in acidic, neutral and very alkaline soils, and new studies show that the seeds contain 32% fat, which means it has the potential for commercial use in the production of biofuel. Even more interesting and important, if it can be used commercially, this plant is a halophyte - meaning it doesn't require saltwater for irrigation so in the right conditions it might be grown anywhere. These dense mat of American glasswort was found growing in the Woodard Bay Conservation Area just outside of Olympia, Washington.

  • Leopard slugs are an introduced species native to Southern Europe and have made their way around the world due to commercial shipping combined with their ability to thrive in multiple types of habitat. With a scientific name (Limax maximus) that literally means "biggest slug", it is one of the longest slugs (but not the biggest) and can live up to three years and reach a length of 6 to 8 inches. This one was found on a type of polypore mushroom called a red belt conk in deep in a forest Montana's Glacier National Park.

  • Vanilla "beans" in the Fakahatchee Strand in SW Florida. Very similar yet not quite the same as commercial vanilla beans which come from another vanilla orchid - Vanilla planifolia. They do however have a strong vanilla scent when the seedpods are fully developed.

  • Very common across most of the Northern hemisphere, oakmoss is a type of fruticose lichen found not only on oaks, but pines and firs as well. In France and other parts of Southern Europe, it is harvested commercially for making perfume that has a sharp, slightly sweet odor. This one was found along with many hundreds of others above Soos Creek, in Kent, Washington State.

  • The American red raspberry is an incredibly delicious native and wild fruit found throughout every Canadian province and territory, as well as every American state except for Kansas, Kentucky, Arkansas, Hawaii, and all of the Gulf Coast states. Most could argue that they are even tastier than the commercially grown raspberries found in grocery stores! These were found growing in the mountains above the Carbon River near Mount Rainier, Washington on a hot summer day.

  • The wild poinsettia goes by many common names such as fire-on-the-mountain, paintedleaf, and dwarf poinsettia and is a member of the spurge family native to North and South America, but has spread all over the world. Related to the commercially important poinsettia that we all have come to love at Christmastime, this one was found growing wild among some landscaping at a community park in Palm Beach County, Florida. Many people think the red part of the is the petals, but they are actually just colored leaves called bracts that surround the flowers. You can see the tiny yellow flowers just inside the red bracts.

  • These wild southern fox grapes, also more popularly known as muscadine grapes, are the wild and natural progenitors of the commercially important and harvested varietal grapes used for making jams and wines. These wild grapes were photographed in Southwest Florida's Fakahatchee Strand - where I regularly snack/gorge on them during the summer when they are are their peak ripeness in the swamps. Delicious!
