  • A close-up of a snowy egret in Punta Rassa, Florida. This little shorebird had to be gradually crept up upon to get this shot. Eventually, it was so close that was literally inches from my leg, making my zoom lens useless!
    Snowy Egret
  • I hit the jackpot in the bog where I photographed this beautiful snowy orchid.... there were upwards of 3000 or more in bloom within an area the size of a football field! A week later I only found three of them that still had flowers. Timing is everything!

  • A snowy October day in the forested slopes of Mount Rainier near Paradise - that point where the roads end and the hiking trails begin. From here on up it's raw nature and the elements that reign.

  • The snowy egret is one of the New World's most widespread egrets, found pretty much everywhere from Southern Canada to Argentina where it is often found along just about any kind of water source, pond, lake, ocean or river where it can find food. With its distinctive bright yellow feet and lores (area in front of the eyes), white plumage and long thin necks this beautiful water bird is often curious and not terribly shy around people. This one was photographed by a lake in Southern Hidalgo County near Weslaco, Texas.

  • This insanely colorful sunrise creates the perfect backlight to Mount Rundle in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada on a bitterly cold winter morning. The only thing that makes this better is the whole scene reflected in the open water of a natural hot spring that keeps this part of the Vermillion Lakes from freezing.

  • A group of house finches perches in a frozen bitterbrush bush in Central Washington on a bitterly cold winter morning. The males' bright red breast and eyebrow plumage stand out in wonderful contrast against the white sky.

  • Moose Meadows in Alberta's Banff National Park under a wonderfully bright, sunny sky on a very chilly Canadian January morning.
Moose Meadows and the Canadian Rockies
  • The sun's first rays of light engulf the entire peak of Cascade Mountain on an extremely chilly morning in Banff National Park in mid-January. The temperatures hovered around -24°F/-31°C. The surrounding valley and forest edges showed some wolf sign in the snow and a few elk were seen off in the distance.

  • A gorgeous winter day on Mount Spokane in Eastern Washington in late January. The forest is quiet, the drifts are deep, and the western hemlocks are frosted with fresh snow.
    Silent Forest in Winter
  • This wildly colorful community of mixed lichen and an (as yet) unidentified moss covered the basalt cliffs in rural Central Washington north of Ephrata in the middle of January.

  • The smallest of all of North America's woodpeckers, the downy woodpecker is also one of the most widespread with a range covering most of the continent except for the most arid parts of the American Southwest. This adult female was found actively hunting for insects in the trees above Ingalls Creek in Washington's Cascade Mountains on a very cold, snowy January afternoon.
