Deer ferns are common throughout the Pacific Northwest and these were found growing in an old-growth part of the forest that is untouched by the logging industry. Native American hunters traditionally used these as a hunger suppressant, and are an important food source for elk in winter.

Moose, elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and pronghorns will readily eat the foliage, while bears birds, rabbits and other small mammals can safely eat the waxy white berries. This snowberry bush was found growing next to the Green River about 20 miles south of Seattle, Washington on a warm summer day.

  • Rocky Coulee is one of the many thousands of coulees in the area around Vantage, Washington that is essentially drainage route that hasn't really quite become an official "creek" but can occasionally carry running water with rain or snowmelt. This particular one in Whiskey Mountain area is absolutely beautiful in the springtime with its explosion of wildflowers including balsamroots, bitterroots, hedgehog cacti, lupine, wild onion, larkspur and many more! Also found at various times in the year: bighorn sheep, bears, elk, all kinds of game birds and birds of prey, and even some spawning salmon at the right time of year!

  • The sun's first rays of light engulf the entire peak of Cascade Mountain on an extremely chilly morning in Banff National Park in mid-January. The temperatures hovered around -24°F/-31°C. The surrounding valley and forest edges showed some wolf sign in the snow and a few elk were seen off in the distance.

  • This white-tailed deer was apparently used to people as it let me get this close to it just outside of Tallahassee on the Florida Panhandle. Extremely common all over the United States and Canada, its range extends from the Atlantic Ocean and west all the way to the Rocky Mountains (fantastic natural barrier), where its cousin - the black-tailed deer completes the range all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Somehow the white-tailed deer has nearly made it to the Pacific Ocean in Canada, and has a strong toehold in all of Central American and the northern part of South America. This is a huge native range for an ungulate (deer, elk, moose family) and it has been introduced in many other parts of the word such and the Caribbean Islands, Europe and even New Zealand.

  • Also known as the saskatoon, the western serviceberry is another very important plant found in the American West. The beautiful white flowers give way to the red to dark purple or black berries that are much sought-after in winter by moose, elk, deer, and birds. Historically, they were highly regarded by native American tribes and called "sweet-berries." This was photographed in Central Washington's Cowiche Canyon where they grow in great profusion along Cowiche Creek.

  • Perhaps the most common and recognizable native hardwood tree in the Pacific Northwest, the bigleaf maple is the largest maple in the area, and the leaves are a prized food source for deer and elk. Pictured here are the winged seeds so commonly and widely recognized by most people. Called samaras, these twin seeds when dried and mature, will split and "whirlybird"  down to the forest floor, and with any luck will sprout. This one was found growing near the edge of Deep Lake, near Enumclaw, WA.
