  • American lotus growing in a lake in North Florida. In mid-summer, these very large flowers can be found in the hundreds on Lake Jackson in Tallahassee, Florida.

  • This fuzzy foot mushroom was found on one of the many fallen/rotting logs that are found near the Lake Jackson Indian Mounds in Tallahassee, Florida just north of Interstate 10. I had a difficult time finding the correct identification for this one (at least I think I did - 98% sure).
    Fuzzy Foot (Xeromphalina campanella)
  • This promethea moth caterpillar was found in a very old hardwood forest near the Lake Jackson Indian Mounds in Tallahassee, Florida. It was one of the biggest caterpillars we've ever seen!

  • Although not in flower, a unique view nonetheless - a pair of the rare and endangered confederate trillium (left) and the spotted trillium (right) growing next to each other in a forest in Tallahassee, Florida. The confederate trillium on the left is showing its distinct silvery-light green markings in the center of the leaves, while the spotted trillium to the right shows a more uniform mottling on the leaves. There is a good chance that there might be some hybridization as there seems to be a similar pattern while lacking the unique and telltale coloring.
    Trilliums (Confederate and Spotted)
  • The very rare and endangered Confederate trillium is one of the most beautiful and striking members of the trillium genus to be found in the American Southwest. These were photographed as part of a very healthy and robust colony, that were recently discovered growing among the more common species of spotted wakerobins in Tallahassee, Florida.
    Confederate Trillium (Trillium reliquum)
  • This puffball mushroom is very common and I see them all over the Southeast. This is just an example of the beauty that I've been walking past so frequently while looking for "the big picture". Sometimes the beauty really is in the details!
    Pear-Shaped Puffball (Lycoperdon pyr..rme)
  • A single lotus flower on a hot summer morning. Most interesting about these flowers are the leaves, which will not get wet, but instead repel waterdrops in such a way that they just form "beads" on top of the pad-like structure. Lots of fun to play with when the fish aren't biting!
